No 25 – La Bourgeoise / Valse des trois soleils – avec Béatrix Méthé

Avec Béatrix Méthé. La première mélodie a été apprise chez Aimé Gagnon dans le magnifique village de Saint-Louis-de-Lotbinière. On peut entendre dans son jeu, et dans plusieurs de ses pièces chantantes, un lointain cousinage avec des airs anciens joués en Poitou où le violon fut aussi apprécié dans la tradition. Ce semble être également une version du Reel des vieux garçons de Isidore Soucy. Pour le deuxième… au nord du nord pas si loin du pôle il y a une école à Iqaluit, Nunavut. C’est là qu’en trio avec Stéphanie Lépine et Simon Riopel on s’en fut allé pour jouer nos traditions entre trois soleils et deux squalls dans la lumière glacée de Frobisher Bay. De retour cet air m’est arrivé, inspiré par la vision d’un parhélie dans le ciel nordique et de l’accueil chaleureux des habitants du pays d’où vient le vent d’hiver. 🎻  With Béatrix Méthé. The first is a sweet little tune learned from Québec fiddler Aimé Gagnon in the beautiful village of Saint-Louis-de-Lotbinière. We can hear in his style of playing, and some of his “singable” tunes, a distant relationship with old tunes played in the French region of Poitou where the fiddle is also a big part of the tradition. This tune also seems like a version of the Reel des vieux garçons (Bachelor Reel) from the repertoire Isidore Soucy. The second is a composition inspired by a trip made with Stéphanie Lépine and Simon Riopel to Iqualuit, Nunavut, to share our music with students in a school there. Beneath three suns (“sun dogs”), two squalls, and the icy light of Frobisher Bay, we were warmed by the welcome of the people who inhabit the home of the north wind.
