Elle a été recueillie en 1974 par notre ami/invité, Robert Bouthillier, un musicologue québécois transplanté depuis nombreuses années en France. William était chanteur, homme à tout faire, menuisier, et avait même créé son propre musée d’objets anciens et d’instruments aratoire à traction animale (boeux et chevaux). D’où venait la populaire version du groupe franco-ontarien rock-trad Garolou? Je ne sais pas du tout…
With Robert Bouthillier. Filmed in Sainte-Béatrix in October 2025. This song comes from the repertoire of William Coutu of Sainte-Émélie-de-l’Énergie. It was collected in 1974 by our friend/guest, Robert Bouthillier, a Québécois ethnomusicologist who has lived for many years in France. William was a singer, handyman, carpenter, and even created his own museum of antique objects and animal-drawn farm implements (oxen and horses). Where did the version popularized by Franco-Ontarian trad rock band Garolou come from? I have no idea…
