No 246 – Chantons pour passer le temps – Denise Levac & Dana Whittle
Avec Denise Levac et Dana Whittle. Tourné à Sainte-Béatrix en août 2026. Nous présentons cet épisode (le tout premier du genre) sans Claude, car il termine une semaine de musique traditionnelle au camp « AlgomaTrad » en compagnie de notre fille, Béatrix Méthé. Denise et moi avons eu le plaisir de passer du temps ensemble cette semaine pour partager un peu de musique! J’ai appris cette chanson auprès de Claude au début des années 1990 – il se souvient l’avoir trouvée dans un recueil populaire de chansons acadiennes et pense l’avoir également entendue sur un enregistrement dont le titre lui échappe pour l’instant (nous mettrons cette information à jour si possible). Je l’ai enregistrée en 1992 (sur cassette) avec Martha Pellerin dans notre groupe Jeter le Pont, quand j’étais encore aux États-Unis (Claude était musicien invité). Quelques années plus tard, avec le groupe Dentdelion version no 2, composé de Claude, moi-même, Denise, Béatrix Méthé, et Colin Savoie-Levac, le fils de Denise, nous avons commencé à créer une version différente, qui a par la suite été empruntée par leur jeune groupe, Les Poules à Colin (aujourd’hui connu sous le nom de Rosier). Denise a toujours adoré cette chanson; nous avons donc décidé de nous faire plaisir en l’interprétant à la fin d’un bel été à Sainte-Béatrix. Je ne sais pas trop ce que cela révèle de l’intelligence (ou du caractère) du capitaine, mais ce motif folklorique se retrouve également dans d’autres cultures! Nous espérons qu’elle vous plaira!

We’re presenting this (first-ever) episode without Claude because he’s winding up a magical week of trad music at AlgomaTrad Family Music & Dance Camp with our daughter Béatrix Méthé. Denise and I had the pleasure of hanging out this week to share a little music of our own! I first learned this song from Claude in the early 1990s – he remembers finding it in a popular French book of Acadian songs and thinks he also may have heard it on a recording who’s name currently escapes him (we will update this if we find more info). I recorded it in 1992 (on cassette) with Martha Pellerin in our group Jeter le Pont, when I was still in the US. Claude was a guest musician on the recording. Fast forward a few years, to Dentdelion version 2 with Denise, Béatrix Méthé and Denise’s son Colin Savoie-Levac, where we created a different arrangement that was subsequently borrowed by their young band Les Poules à Colin, now known as Rosier. Denise has always loved this song so we decide to have some fun with it at the end of a beautiful summer in Sainte-Béatrix. For non-French speakers, It is the story of a young woman who disguises as a sailor in order to serve on the ship captained by her lover. He finds her vaguely familiar looking but she lands the job, working for 7 years alongside him before he finally recognizes her and announces that they can use the money she’s earned to start of their future married life. I’m not sure what this says about the captain’s intelligence (or character), but this folk theme exists in other cultures as well! We hope you enjoy it!
