Zigue – Hivernages

TM003 / 2019 – Hivernages is the second recording from Québec folk-trad band Zigue (Claude Méthé and Dana Whittle). The duo’s core players have performed together for more than a quarter-century, and their music falls cleanly between the cracks in the traditional Québécois music world they inhabit. They are often considered not trad enough for the purists – Méthé composes almost all of the material, but is sounds like it came from another era – and they’re too trad to be taken for folksingers. But they just keep on doing their thing, and this time around, they have been joined by their son, Aimé Méthé, who recently took up fiddle and banjo (he already plays a bunch of other instruments). In addition, the album features compositions and recompositions of songs signed by Claude and Dana, plus a few guest appearances – their daughter Béatrix Méthé, multi-instrumentalist Quinn Bachand and French singer Martine Benedictus. Those looking for new takes on old songs, new old-sounding songs and roots-inspired tunes will enjoy this very fresh sound.

Hivernages est le deuxième album du groupe folk-trad Zigue (Claude Méthé et Dana Whittle). Ses fondateurs, mariés depuis plus que 25 ans, passent souvent entre les mailles du filet trad. Leur son n’est pas assez trad pour les puristes – les airs sont plutôt des compositions de Claude qui semblent appartenir à une autre époque – mais ils sont trop trad pour le monde folk. Malgré ça, ils n’arrêtent pas, et cette fois, ils sont rejoint par leur fils Aimé Méthé, qui a commencé assez récemment au violon et banjo (il joue déjà d’autres instruments). L’album comprend aussi pleines de compositions et de recompositions de chansons signées par Claude et Dana, avec quelques invités – leur fille Béatrix Méthé, le multi-instrumentiste Quinn Bachand et la chanteuse Martine Benedictus en visite de la France. Un album pour tous qui cherchent à découvrir des vieilles chansons, des chansons qui sonnent vieilles et des airs inspirés de la tradition.
