No 41 – Le Reel de Jos Larade
Avec Nicolas Babineau et Alexis Chartrand. Bien connu comme chanteur et violoneux à Chéticamp, Cap-Breton, Joseph Larade m’a été d’un grande inspiration grâce aux archives acadiennes du Père Anselme Chiasson. Merci à Devon et Dejah Léger de nous avoir fait découvrir aussi l’excellent violoneux dans le chanteur. Un gros merci à la jeunesse trad d’ici de mettre en valeur ces anciens airs en les faisant si bien tourner! 🎻 With Nicolas Babineau and Alexis Chartrand. Well known as a singer and fiddler in Chéticamp, Cape Breton (NS), Joseph Larade was a big inspiration to me when I discovered him in the Acadian archives of Father Anselme Chiasson. Thanks to Devon and Dejah Léger for helping me to discover the amazing fiddler hidden in the singer. And a big thanks to the younger trad generation right here in Québec for playing these old tunes with such verve!
No 40 – Seulement une tasse / Big John McNeil
Avec Jean Cantin et Michel Leblanc. Jean a appris cette chanson de son oncle Lucien Jetté de Saint-Alexis-de-Montcalm. Un personnage incontournable dans l’histoire et la vivacité de la chanson traditionnelle de Lanaudière, Lucien l’aurait apprise dans sa jeunesse, en fêtant jusqu’aux p’tites heures, la tasse à la main, avec la famille Pelland de Sainte-Julienne. Mélangé avec Big John McNeil, reel d’origine écossaise qui a beaucoup voyagé et devenu un standard trad en Amérique. 🎻 With Jean Cantin and Michel Leblanc. Jean learned this song from his uncle Lucien Jetté of Saint-Alexis-de-Montcalm. An inimitable figure in the Lanaudière region’s musical tradition, Lucien learned this song in his younger days, partying until the wee hours, cup in hand, at Pelland family gatherings in the town of Sainte-Julienne. Mixed in is Big John McNeil, a Scottish reel that has made its way across the ocean to become a trad standard in North America.
No 39 – Calamine / Volkswagen breakdown
Avec Dana Whittle. Quand il faut composer avec l’herbe à puce, le violon peut nous être très utile à trouver l’inspiration. Pour nous, nos (deux) Eurovans ont été toujours une aventure sur la route des paysages… et des arrêts non prévus aux garages et concessionaires. Un des véhicules les plus confortables en attendant la remorqueuse! 🎻 With Dana Whittle. The fiddle has its own inspiration when composing while suffering from poison ivy. For us, our (two) Eurovans were always an adventure in the making, whether enjoying the scenery or making unplanned stops in garages and parts stores along the way. One of the most comfortable vehicles to be in while awaiting the tow truck!
No 38 – Le Merle bleu
Avec Suzie Blanchette. J’ai rencontré la multi-instrumentiste Suzie Blanchette dans un jam au Crapo de Matha, qui avec sa mandoline, rejoint bien l’esprit de la tradition. Elle a composé cette pièce au flageolet, inspirée par le retour des merles bleus aux cabanes de Claude à Sainte-Béatrix. Nous avons tenté d’identifier une forme de danse qui corresponde – ce qui lui ressemble le plus serait une bourrée trois temps dansée en Occitanie (France). 🎻 With Suzie Blanchette. I met multi-instrumentalist Suzie Blanchette in a jam at Le Crapo in Saint-Jean-de-Matha, playing her mandolin that fits right into the tradition. We tried to identify a dance form that corresponds with the whistle composition she composed, inspired by the bluebirds flitting in and out of their houses custom-made by Claude, and decided that it seems closest to a “bourrée”, popular in the Occitania region of France.
No 37 – La Tapeuse
Avec Denise Levac et Dana Whittle. Ici avec notre amie de Dentdelion et de Mil, la maman trad de Matha qui à la flûte apporte sa joyeuse contribution dans la couleur du son trad d’ici. L’air a été composé pour Dana, une des rares femme guitariste – et podorythmiste – dans la tradition québécoise. Elle a apprivoisé la chanson autant que la saveur de la tradition passant du Vermont à Lanaudière. Impliquée depuis belle lurette dans le mouvement trad autant par ses talents de designer que musicienne, toujours dans l’espoir d’élargir l’espace féminin dans l’univers trad contemporain. 🎻 With Denise Levac and Dana Whittle. Our longtime bandmate (Dentdelion, Mil), this “trad mom” from Saint-Jean-de-Matha adds the joyful sound of her flute in the trad colour of our region. The tune was composed for Dana, one of the rare female guitarists – and foot tappers – in the Québec tradition. She has mastered both Québécois songs and tunes on her path from Vermont to Lanaudière. Her longtime involvement on the trad scene, both as a designer and musician, has always been in hopes of growing the feminine presence in the contemporary traditional universe.
No 36 – Le Reel de la patte gauche
Avec David Brunelle. Quel plaisir de jouer ici en duo avec David Brunelle qui affectionne la vieille manière de jouer, et dans son esprit, tente toujours d’en conserver la recette. Voici un air joué en vielle, trad à l’ancienne, composé par Claude, avec un clin d’oeil à notre ami Jean Cantin, un gaucher qui joue la guitare à l’envers, sur une guitare à l’endroit (sans pourtant inverser l’ordre des cordes!). 🎻 With David Brunelle. What a pleasure to play with David Brunelle, who despite his youth, loves to play the old-fashioned way, always working to preserve the spirit of the tune. For this reel, we are tuned in “vielle” (open tuning), to play Claude’s composition the way it might have been played back in the day. The title was inspired by our good friend Jean Cantin, a lefty who plays a right-handed guitar upside down, (without changing the order of the strings!).
No 35 – Les P’tits cochons / Le Rang Kildare / La Gigue des débardeurs
Avec Jacques Landry (os) et Simon Degrave (banjo). Mon père, Marc, affectionnait les tout-petits enfants avec plusieurs expressions autour du mot “cochons”. Lorsqu’à table ils se gavaient joyeusement devant lui, il avait cette expression “bourre la face les p’tits cochons”, ou avec le bébé dans ses bras, “mon petit cochon du lait”. Je fais maintenant de même avec nos trois p’tit cochons (qui ne sont pas si petits!). On prend souvent le rang Kildare qui mène à Rawdon où sa population, issue de l’immigration irlandaise, a laissé ses traces et ses couleurs musicales. Mes souvenirs d’enfance les plus heureux sont à Trois-Pistoles dans les années ’60, la beauté du fleuve, l’île-aux-Basques, et toute la vie maritime autour du quai. Les débardeurs sur les goélettes à corder les “pitounes”, bois de pulpe, et nous, jour après jour, à pêcher l’éperlan avec nos cannes en bambou. 🎻 With Jacques Landry (bones) and Simon Degrave (banjo). My father, Marc, used affectionate terms with his grandchildren – around the dinner table, “bourre la face les p’tits cochons” (eat up, piglets) and to a (still-breastfed) baby in his arms “mon p’tit cochon de lait” (my little “milk piglet”). I do the same with our own “three little pigs” (who aren’t very little anymore). We often take the rang (road) Kildare to go to Rawdon where the population, many famine-era Irish immigrants, have left their colourful mark on the music of this area. My happiest childhood memories are of Trois-Pistoles, QC in the sixties – the beauty of the St. Lawrence river, Ile-aux-Basques and the maritime life dockside. The “débardeurs” (longshoremen) on the “goélettes du St-Laurent”, boats that were specially designed to transport “les pitounes” (wood for pulp) on the river; us on our daily smelt-fishing jaunts, bamboo poles in hand.
No 34 – Les Noces de jade
Avec Béatrix Méthé et Dana Whittle. Les noces de papier depuis longtemps sont passées; les noces de diamants trop loin en avant, mais les noces de jade célèbrent 26 ans d’un doux temps où les saisons qui se succèdent apportent toujours du changement à marcher devant, cherchant toujours à suivre le sentier de l’amour constant. La pièce a été composée et enregistrée en 2021. On le sort en 2022 en honneur à notre 27ème année – selon l’internet, les “noces de la sculpture”! 🎻 With Béatrix Méthé and Dana Whittle. The paper anniversary is long gone; the diamond anniversary is still far in the future, but the jade anniversary (26 years) brought with it good things, seasons to look forward to, always striving to stay on the path to eternal love. Composed and recorded in 2021, we’re offering it here in honour of our 27th year of marriage – according to the internet, the “sculpture” anniversary!
No 33 – La Chaudière qui déborde / Le Feu va prendre
Avec Jean Cantin et Michel Leblanc. Beaucoup de pièces irlandaises, à travers le temps, l’immigration, les noces, les veillées – et l’Internet – sont passées dans la tradition québécoise, avec de multiples variantes et appellations. Michel a pêchées celles ci, dont il oublie les noms. On vous invite à nous aider à trouver les vrais titres et l’origine de ces pièces. 🎻 With Jean Cantin and Michel Leblanc. Over time, immigration, weddings, parties – and the Internet – many Irish tunes have made their way into the Québécois tradition, with countless versions and titles. Michel fished these from the great Trad Sea without knowing their true names. We invite you to help us identify them!
